Southampton Port Receives Four Mega Quay Cranes in £60 Million Upgrade

Quay Cranes

DP World has successfully delivered four mega quay cranes to Southampton Port, representing a £60 million investment. Each crane weighs more than 2,000 tonnes and reaches nearly 150 metres, making it among the tallest port cranes globally.

The cranes are capable of performing tandem lifts, which allows operators to unload twice the number of heavy 40-foot containers simultaneously. Once all four cranes are operational, they will allow the port to accommodate container ships that carry over 24,000 containers and enhance overall cargo-handling productivity.

For India’s port sector, the development highlights the growing importance of high-capacity quay cranes as ports prepare to handle larger container vessels and rising cargo volumes. Investments in modern crane technology can help improve vessel turnaround times and strengthen terminal handling capacity.
