Puerto Aguadulce in Colombia has received five new hybrid RTG cranes as part of a US$12 million investment by terminal operator Sociedad Puerto Industrial de Aguadulce (SPIA). The cranes can lift up to 41 tonnes and will be integrated with the terminal operating system to support faster yard operations.
The new equipment is expected to increase truck-handling capacity by 30% and reduce waiting and turnaround times for cargo delivery and collection. The hybrid RTGs are also expected to reduce fuel consumption by around 45% compared with conventional equipment, while automated locking and positioning systems will improve safety and accuracy during yard operations.
The development is significant for India, as ports across the country strive for enhanced cargo-handling efficiency, reduced fuel consumption, and increased reliance on automated equipment. With Indian ports experiencing a rise in container volumes, hybrid RTGs and other energy-efficient cargo-handling systems are likely to play a crucial role in modernising terminal operations.
