Kolkata Port Sees Cargo Growth, Starts Lime Imports

Kolkata Port

Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata, handled 40.527 million metric tonnes of cargo between April and October 2026, registering a 5.1% increase over the same period last year. Both Haldia Dock Complex and Kolkata Dock System contributed to the growth. Container traffic also rose by 7.98%, reaching 587,399 TEUs.

The port has also started handling a new cargo at Haldia. On November 1, the vessel MV Asian Honor arrived from Dibba, UAE, carrying 8,133 tonnes of quick lime and hydrated lime in bags. This is the first time Haldia has received a consignment of quick lime.

Quick lime is an important raw material for the steel industry, where it is used to remove impurities and form slag during steelmaking. The new cargo is expected to help Haldia attract more industrial shipments and support steel and other industries across eastern India.
