VOC Port Sets New Single-Day Cargo Handling Record

V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority (VOC Port) handled a record 217,332 tonnes of cargo in a single day on September 5, 2026, surpassing its previous record of 216,631 tonnes recorded in February. The latest throughput included bulk, liquid, and containerised cargo.

Containerised cargo contributed 66,927 tonnes, equivalent to 3,348 TEUs. Coal accounted for 62,466 tonnes, followed by thermal coal at 49,067 tonnes and limestone at 20,671 tonnes, along with sulphuric acid, palm oil, sugar, general cargo, and windmill blades.

The port has also reported growth in cargo volumes, handling 35.35 lakh tonnes in August 2026, up 9.36% from the same month last year. VOC Port is expanding its cargo-handling infrastructure through projects including the upgrade of Berth No. 7 into a container terminal, mechanisation of North Cargo Berth-III, and development of a 40-acre Custom Bond Area.
