Safiport Derince has received the first six of 12 new-generation electric rubber-tyred gantry cranes (RTGs) as it moves ahead with a programme to double its annual container capacity from 750,000 TEUs to 1.5 million TEUs. The fully electric cranes feature advanced automation systems to improve container handling and yard efficiency.

The first six RTGs arrived aboard the Xiang Fu. Once all 12 cranes are delivered, Safiport’s RTG fleet will increase to 25 units. The equipment rollout follows the addition of four new ship-to-shore cranes, taking the terminal’s STS fleet to eight and enabling it to handle vessels up to 24 containers wide.

As part of its expansion, Safiport is extending its main container quay from 700 metres to 1,200 metres while maintaining an 18-metre water depth. The terminal aims to achieve an annual container capacity of 1.5 million TEU by 2027.
