The Directorate General of Maritime Administration (DGMA) has cautioned that India’s ports face increasing cybersecurity risks as automation and digital technologies become more widely adopted across maritime operations. The advisory urges port operators and stakeholders to strengthen cyber resilience to safeguard critical infrastructure and ensure uninterrupted cargo movement.

According to the DGMA, greater use of automated systems, connected equipment, and digital platforms has improved efficiency but also increased the sector’s exposure to cyber threats. The administration has called for stronger cybersecurity practices, regular risk assessments, and better protection of operational technology systems used in ports.

The warning arises as India persists in modernising its ports through significant maritime development initiatives. Industry experts assert that, in addition to investments in automation, a balanced focus on cybersecurity will be crucial for safeguarding port operations, ensuring supply chain reliability, and bolstering the country’s expanding maritime trade ambitions.
