Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) and Shoft Shipyard & Drydock (SDHI) have received approval under the National Shipbuilding Mission for the brownfield expansion of their shipbuilding facilities. The approval aims to enhance India’s domestic shipbuilding capacity and strengthen the country’s maritime manufacturing ecosystem.
The expansion projects will focus on upgrading existing infrastructure, increasing production capabilities, and enabling the construction of larger and more advanced vessels. According to the announcement, the initiative is part of the government’s broader strategy to build a globally competitive shipbuilding industry and reduce dependence on overseas shipyards.
The development is expected to create new opportunities for India’s marine engineering, heavy equipment, and material-handling sectors. Industry experts believe the expansion will also boost demand for advanced cranes, lifting systems and port equipment as shipyards modernise their facilities to support higher production volumes and future vessel orders.
