Abrolhos Steel has replaced a crane that had been operating for around 30 years at its Geraldton facility with a new Konecranes overhead crane. The upgrade was carried out to address difficulties in sourcing spare parts for the older equipment and improve reliability.

The new 5-tonne single-girder overhead crane features an 18m span and is used for handling steel plates, sheets, hollow sections, pipes, roofing materials, and various other structural products. This equipment plays a crucial role in supporting the company’s breakbulk operations, which include shipments to remote locations.

The new crane also includes monitoring features that allow Abrolhos Steel to track the number of loads handled and plan maintenance more effectively. Removal of the old crane and installation of the replacement were completed within one week, helping the facility continue its operations with limited disruption.
