India has designated Deendayal, Jawaharlal Nehru, Paradip, and Mundra as the country’s first mega ports under the Indian Ports Act, 2025. The new classification covers three major ports and privately operated Mundra.
The government introduced the mega port category in July, with qualifying thresholds of 150 million tonnes of annual cargo for bulk ports and 7.5 million TEUs for container ports. The classification is based on cargo handling capacity and throughput.
The new status does not change the existing legal classification of the four ports or the rules governing their operations. The four ports are the first to receive mega port status since the Indian Ports Act, 2025, came into force.
