Cosco Shipping has transported 17 RTG cranes to the Port of Walvis Bay in Namibia using three specialised vessels. The cranes were shipped from Zhenhua Heavy Industries’ Nantong base in China as part of an effort to strengthen the port’s handling capacity.

Despite a challenging preparation schedule, the project team efficiently coordinated vessel allocation, terminal operations, and loading activities, which included night work. All 17 RTG cranes were loaded successfully and passed inspection on the first attempt, utilising the vessels’ heavy-lift capabilities and ample deck space.

The equipment is expected to improve efficiency and increase throughput at Walvis Bay, one of Southern Africa’s key Atlantic gateways. For India, the development highlights the importance of modern RTG cranes in expanding container handling capacity and improving efficiency as ports across the country continue to modernise.
